rESEARCH fINAL DEADLINE

    fRIDAY, 22 mAY 3PM

 Freshman lit & Comp

Lab:  Begin organizing materials and deciding ON HOW TO PUT IT ALL TOGETHER.Your C-notes are already organized according to the argumentative format.  Each page indicates Arg.#1,#2,#3, Counter, Rebuttal.  Your notes should already be organized in this fashion and in your own words so this should be the semi-easy part. Check with me, google doc or email.  If you submit good docs it may take me a couple hours to get to you because there are a lot of you and only one me.

Begin working on the draft outline.  Outlines MUST have in-text citations: At the least each per paragraph.

3/23

Monday:  Today, check your outline and compare it to your  bibliography:

  • Have I used five sources? Are there three types?

  • Are the sources I have used in my bibliography AND the outline?

  • Are there any sources not used?   If so remove from bibliography.

  • Are there citations of sources in my outline and not in my bibliography?  If so, add that source citation to bibliography.

3/24

Tuesday:Lab

Works Cited Page using Google tutorial!

Transform your bibliography into your Works Cited page.

  • Check each entry of bibliography for accuracy:

Is each entry in the bibliography entered correctly in MLA format?  (purdue owl)

See the link for the "Works Cited Using Google Docs" on my home page. Ensure:

  • All entries are alphabetical by author's last name or the first key word in the "article title."

  • The entire document is double spaced/only one double space between entries.

  • Each entry has a hanging indent. No numbers no bullets

  • Your works cited page is titled Works Cited.

  • The entire document is Times New Roman size 12 font.

  • Sophomores should paginate it.

  • No Header in left corner as there is on page one.

3/25

Wednesday:  LAB:  Continue working on organizing material into your outline and creating with in text citations and creating your works cited page.

**Remember:  Outlines:Double space, add title, no pg.#

For every A there has to have a B.For every 1. there has to be a 2.

Freshmen:  Need only A. and B. for each Roman Numeral.

Sophomores: Should take it to the 1. and 2.

Example:  I. Topic sentence for #1 Argument.  (no citation)

                   A.  Support/Reason/Example (CITATION).

                         1. Support for the above reason/example (cite)

                         2. Support for the above reason/example(cite)

                   B.  Support/Reason/Example (CITATION).

                         1. Support for the above reason/example.(cite)

                         2. Support for the above reason/example.(cite)

Then the pattern repeats.  Now, does the research outline extend further than this?  Absolutely.  We take it one step at a time and this is what the expectations are:  Freshman:  A.B. for each Roman, Sophomores: A. 1. 2. B. 1. 2. for each Roman.

Look at your examples; I gave you two handouts Monday.  Some of you were absent Monday.  If you have a buddy, text them for a picture of the handout.  If not Purdue Owl is our resource.  Don't let Purdue Owl overwhelm you.  Follow OUR guidelines above because you can include the whole alphabet! We don't want to do that.  Keep it simple and understand what you are dong.  Email me often.  This is your opportunity to get one-on-one help without worrying about what someone else is going to think.  I'm here for you. k It's kind of lonely because only half of you are emailing.  I'm hoping the other quarter is fine and the other quarter is just taking a break.  Don't wait til the last minute.  Email me!

3/26

Thursday:  Lab:  Today we are still working in the lab on our outlines and works cited pages.  I'll be providing feed back to those who have already submitted these items, so you can make changes if necessary. Email  me with any and all questions you have.

****Is everyone getting what they need from the web site? Please email me with suggestions.  What would YOU like to see on the web site?  What would YOU fine helpful?  I'm not hearing from some of you.  Email me if you need someone to talk with. I can help.

3/27

Friday: Lab  Continue working on the outline.  Put in your in text citations as you go. Remember Purdue Owl has an example.

Parent letter sent to all emails

Happy Monday Everyone!

Many of you have successfully progressed by using google docs to submit your works cited pages and your outlines. Congratulations! This week, students will be putting together their projects. This is the fun part! Using google slides, you will create a presentation that is based on your argumentative outline. If you have not submitted your outline yet, you may do so this week. I want to emphasize that this is a requirement for graduation and still must be completed. These skills are important and will be built upon next year when other things will be emphasized. Please encourage your student to continue working on those things that we reviewed before we went on break. Everyone has received some sort of feedback depending upon what was submitted through google docs. So your documents. I have not received many outlines and these should be coming in this week. The ten points extra credit was offered before the break and still stands as long as you have turned in the following items:

1. 5 annotated sources with Cornell notes

2. Bibliography

3. Works Cited

4. Outline with in text citations (not everyone will find this WS useful/no need to complete if       you understand) Follow Purdue Owl example.

5. Slide presentation following rubric

I have included a copy of our department research booklet that might be helpful to some.Attachment two is a worksheet that may help some. It's not for everyone nor do you have to complete it.Finally, the project checklist/rubric. Look at it as the requirements for the google slides visual aid. Please visit the freshman tab of our website and stay positive.

You are almost finished! Email me with questions.

Next Week we will be doing some creative writing.

 May 11- 15 Writing Assignment!!

Step One:

Think:Think about your life and experiences since 15 March 2020 when we heard the words COVID-19 and "pandemic." Then we learned what "Quarantine" meant.  Later, we heard the words "remote learning" and then it was "e-learning." What have these words meant to us?  Have these words changed our lives? If so, then in what ways?  If we have changed, has it been for better or worse?  Have we change as a community and if our community has changed, how?  Has that affected you personally? I want you to consider these questions and begin to organize your thoughts onto paper. There is a lot to think about.

So, brainstorm what you have experienced and choose three areas that had the most significant impact on you (positive or negative) Detail what the challenge was and how you felt about it.  Did you find your way through it? Did something or someone have a role in how you experienced  it?

Step Two: After brainstorming and jotting down a few ideas, develop a formal sentence outline.  This outline should have no fewer than five paragraphs, but may be more. No in-text citations needed unless you use very specific information from the CDC, WHO, or local/national news.Better to cite than not.*

Step Three:  Begin writing your introduction with hook. Think about writing for someone who did not experience this.  Include background information like where it came from, how it got here. What were your feelings as you learned about it.

The intro goes at the top of the outline and the conclusion goes at the end.  Neither have Roman Numerals or Letters.  They are paragraphs.

**The formal sentence outline follows MLA format and is

    DUE 14 May (Thursday)

Step Four: Begin writing your narrative that chronicles your experiences from first hearing about COVID-19 to present. You may share how you feel in this paper and you may use first person pronouns.  Do NOT USE CONTRACTIONS unless you are quoting someone.

You will be graded on how well you articulate how you feel about what has occurred and how well you have followed instructions.

The paper should be 1-3 pages typed, double spaced and submitted through google docs: Last name and hr must be on document.  No name papers will be deleted and no credit given.

Step Five:Submit narrative to Google docs no later than midnight 19 May 2020.No Late Submissions.

Email questions. See tutorial about outlines.
